Incomplete copy (the beginning and end are missing) of a Christian prayer book, arranged according to dates of the year. The work starts with a longer prayer (fols. 1r till 6v) afterwards several prayer for specific days in the months October, November, December, January, February, March and April are mentioned. The names if the months that are used, (“Ayul” “Tishrin al-awwal”, “Tishrin ath-thani”, “Kanun al-awwal”, “Kanun ath-thani”, “Shubat”), were common in the region of Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Jordanian. Every new month starts with a few lines in red stating how many days there are in this month (in normal years and in leap years). |

¶ Arabic translation by Yuhanna b. Cyriakus (d. 1625, Graf, GCAL, vol. 3, p. 350) of Dichiarazione piú copiosa della Doctrina Cristiana, the great catechism by cardinal Roberto Bellarmino (1542-1621). The first edition of this Arabic translation was printed in Rome as early as 1627. The present edition is of Rome 1770. The translator is also known as Johannes Hesronita.
(2) Irshad li-Agl al-I`tiraf wa-Tanawul al-Qurban al-Muqaddas. Talihi Af`al al-Fada’il al-Ilahiyya wa-Ba`d Riyadat takhuss al-Masihi Mumarasatuha. Anonymous treatise on the Confession and Eucharist, followed by prayers and exercises. Apparently also printed in Rome in 1770. See Graf, GCAL, vol. 4, p. 257. |

Kitab Muhawala Gidaliyya garat bayn al-Rahib Sam`an wa-bayn Talatat Anfar min al-Muslimin. The story of religious disputation between the Monk Sam`an and three thousand Muslims, held in the presence of the king (which one?), during the reign of the Ayyubid Sultan al-Malik al-Zahir (reigned in Aleppo, 582-613/1186-1216). The disputation took place, according to a note on f. 1a, in Damascus, while the city of Antakiya (Antioch) was under the domination of Lawun and Stephan, the Armenians. This happened on the tenth of (month not mentioned) in the year 6615 Era of Adam.
¶ An important and amusing text in the history of religious disputations between Christianity and Islam as seen from the Christian side, which was in use till modern times. There exist many different versions. One of these is an Arabic version published in c. 1925 in Beirut: Mugadalat an-Anba Gurgi al-Rahib al-Sam`ani ma`a thalath Shuyukh min Fuqaha’ al-Muslimin, with a title in French: Controverse religieuse entre un moine de Saint Simeon et trois Cheikhs Musulmans. That booklet was edited by a Catholic priest sent to the mission in Africa, and the text was evidently in use in Roman-Catholic missionary activities.
The spelling in the MS is sometimes according to the spoken language, e.g. t instead of th.
