This manuscript consists in different books, The first book is a diary of a Syriac man from Aleppo, who may have been involved with the church. On the last page of the diary he mentions the visit of the Patriarch to Aleppo in December 1976. Other books include; history of Aleppo, history of Syriacs, history of th syriac church in India, Easter etc. There is also his advice to his children 'Oh my children,I your father,Gabriel son of Yeshu Qawme from Diyarbakir,give you a fatherly advice etc'... Therefore this is the same man who wrote the Syriac book in 1921 at the age of 17. In 1976 he would have been 72 years old and still writing. |

The first edition of Kitab al-Shahr al-Maryami, the ‘Month of St. Mary’, a work of devotion for the Virgin Mary, translated by Lebbeus (Liba’us) al-Mutaini (d. 1790) from the Italian work entitled Il mese di Maria by Alfonso Muzzarelli (1749-1813), which was first published in Ferrara 1785. See Graf, GCAL, vol. 3, p. 473.
The translator was member of the Lebanese Congregation. After the first edition of this work of 1842 several more followed, both in Rome and in the Orient (Jerusalem, Beirut, Mosul).
On p. 3, the beginning of the preface is dated 5 Tishrin II (November) 1842. The preface is signed (p. 4) by Aghnatiyus, Rayyis Asaqifat al-Raha. In the preface it is also said that the booklet was distributed free of charge by the Congregation ‘De propaganda fide’ [in Rome] (Magma` Intishar al-Iman al-Muqaddas).
On the final page is a Nihil obstat by Franciscus Mehaseb Maronita. Also on the final page is a double Imprimatur, one by Fr. Dom. Buttaoni O.P.S.P.A.M., the other by Joseph Canali Archiep. Colossen. Vicesgerens.
The colophon on p. 211 gives a further detailed origin for the Kitab al-Shahr al-Maryami, the ‘Month of St. Mary’. There it is said the subject matter of the present work was taken from a larger work, entitled `Awatif Mutabadila ma bayn al-Batul al-Kulliyya al-Qaddasa wa-`Abidiha, by al-Ab Tuma Uriyama. Whether this refers to the Arabic text or the Italian original not clear.
