Sawa`iyya, Kitab Urulugiyun, Horologion, apparently of one of the Syrian Churches (Melkite?), but the MS does not contain indications as to which Church it belongs. Several sections can be distinguished:
(1) ff. 1b-79b. Horologion.
(2) ff. 81b-227b. Troparia, etc., working through the liturgical year.
(3) ff. 228a-254b. Troparia for Fast and Easter, and beyond.
(4) ff. 255a-268b. Thawutukiyyat, Maria devotion.
(5) ff. 269a-272a. Friday prayers, etc.
(6) ff. 272a-293a. The service of Benediction.
(7) ff. 293b-328b. Canons, Afashin.
Occasionally expressions in Greek script (ff. 59b, 280a, 292a, 308b)
Personal notes (births, ownership) can be seen at several instances in the MS (ff. 1a, 80a-81a, 330b). All date from around 1840. Owner’s name Niqula …(Nicholas Shakhtura) on the fore-edge.
This manuscript once belonged to the priest Yuhanna Fakhuri. |

Madkhal al-`Ibada (‘Introduction to the Devotion’). First Arabic edition of the Introduction à la vie dévote, the ‘Introduction to the Devout Life’ by St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), who wrote this work in 1608 (first edition published in 1609). From then till the present day the book has retained a large readership and it has been styled the most influence Christian self-help book of all time. The translator of the Arabic version seems to be deacon Farag Allah al-Ladhiqi rather than the Jesuit father Pierre Fromage whose name is sometimes mentioned in this connection. The Arabic text is divided into five parts (guz’), which are subdivided into sections (fasl). The text is preceded by an Introduction (Fatiha) and a detailed table of contents (Fihris).
