The beginning of the miracles of the Virgin Mary starts in the 13th century in France (:Legenda Aurea). With the crusaders the tales reached the Holy land and came through Egypt to Ethiopia. The litterature of the Ethiopian church was by the initiative of the Ethiopian ruler Dawit II.in 14th century with the transference from the Arabic tales on the miracles of Maryam reached. His son and successor Zar'a Ya'eqob has by declaration of 32 fastdays for the Virgin Maryam and by that choise, they read 3 miracles in the Sundaysliturgy. The collection of miracles of Maryam is certainly a mirror of chistianity. The manuscript starts with the so-called canon of al-Mu'allaqa,which gives information about the miracle of the Virgin Maryam and the fastdays of church years, it also gives good tidings over the gathering of the coptic bishops in Old-cairo. Then followed by praires and hymnes. This manuscript consists in a choise of 111 (numbered) miracles. The text starts with stories over the life of Virgin Maryan and then the real miracles like the second miniatur with the man with his stone feet. When the man sought his way to Maria his feet were healed. This manuscript dates from the second half of the 19th century because of his palaeographiq and codicologic appearence. The last written page contains a lot of names and owners of the manuscript and also a fingerprint of a buy of this manuscript in 1934. the price then was 170 Berr(= ethiopishe taler). 7 superbe miniaturs
are in this book.(See pictures) |

In the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the text of the Gospels was considered the most important holy writing; the miniatures at the beginning of this manuscript were intended to be viewed during liturgical processions. Such works were frequently presented to churches by distinguished patrons; they reflected both the prestige of royal benefactors and the erudition of the monastic scriptoria in which they were created. It is dated on the first page below 1600 A.D. in Geez writing. |
