One of the best known Qur’an commentaries of the classical period
Arabic, polished European paper, 249 ff., 28.5 x 17.5 cm, naskh script, Qur’anic text is distinguished from the Tafsir by the use of red ink, not dated, but well before 1132/1729-1730 (owner’s note), full-leather Oriental binding with flap, with blind tooled ornamentation.

Volume 1 (containing the explanation of sura 1-18) only (out of a set of 2 volumes) of Anwar al-Tanzil wa-Asrar al-Ta’wil, the exegesis of the Qur’an by `Abdallah b. `Umar al-Baydawi (d. 716/1316?), GAL G I, 417.
On the fly-leaf in front is an owner’s note in Turkish by Hafiz Sa`id Efendi, the imam of the Friday mosque in Kyustendil (Western Bulgaria), dated 10 August 1904/1320.
Also on this fly-leaf is an undated waqf note, telling that the book was made into a waqf by a lady called Sadiqa Khatun for the new Madrasa built by al-Hagg Ahmad Agha, known as Saqallizada:And there is also an owner’s note (Munla …, other names made illegible) which shows the date 1132 (1719-1720).

On fols. 1r till 13r some damage by water and wormholes with some loss of text in the introduction (fols. 1 and 2). Half leather binding. |

Texts on grammar with extensive commentary in the margins. 1:fols.1-51:al-kafiya fi'I-nahw by the 13th century Egyptian-born grammarian Ibn al-Hajjb is a consise textbook on syntax, which enjoyed great fame and provided the basis for numerous commentaries. The author taught in Cairo and Damascus.(Gal G1,367-370). 2:fol.52a: Notes on grammatical anomalies such as list of words that lack a feminine ending. 3:fols.53-84a: al-Misbah fi'l-nahw by Nasir al-Din b.'Abd al-Sayyid al-Mutarizzi is a compendium of Arabic grammar, which al-Mutarizzi had originally compiled for his son, and which was based on the work of 'Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani. It eventually attained a wide circulation as a textbook of grammar.(Gal G1,350-352;Gal S1,514-515). 4:fol.84b:a diagam on reflextions. 5:fols.85-99a: Mi'at'amil by Shaykh'Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani, a well-known grammarian and philologist who was born and raised in Gurgan. His elementary treatise "the hundred elements" on Arabic syntax was popular among his contemporaries. 6:fols. 99b-100b: reflection on the text by grammarian al-Jurjani. |
